Original Ambrose Burnside Signed Rhode Island Civil War Certificate May 1869

This listing is for an original, signed General Ambrose Burnside document from May 1869. Certificate measures 14 x 18 inches and is in excellent condition. Burnside’s signature is large, bold, and clear. Burnside’s image is also at the top of the document.
Ambrose Everett Burnside was an American soldier, railroad executive, inventor, industrialist, and politician from Rhode Island. He served as the Governor of Rhode Island from 1866 to 1869, and as a United States Senator for Rhode Island from 1875 until his death. As a Union Army General during the American Civil War of 1861-1865, he conducted successful campaigns in North Carolina and East Tennessee, as well as countering the raids of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, but suffered disasterous defeats at the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of the Crater. His distinctive style of facial hair became known as sideburns, derived from his last name. In 1871, he became the first president of the National Rifle Association, holding the office until 1872.
Document reads, “The State of Rhode Island desiring to recognize in a permanent and appropriate form the faithful and heroic services of her Citizen Soldiers and Sailors has by a unanimous vote of the General Assembly of 1869 directed the undersigned to present to John A. Gray this Testimonial of Honor, in grateful remembrance of the Courage and Patriotism by him displayed in the late War for the suppression of rebellion and the preservation of Constitutional Liberty. Providence, May 4th, 1869.”
It is signed by the Rhode Island Adjutant General and A.E. Burnside, the Governor.
